Why We Walk

2Steppers Captain, Irene Unger, Taken @ 2017 National MS Conference

“Celebrate we will because life is short but sweet for certain.” - DMB, Two Step

2Steppers captain, Irene Unger, was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1999 at the age of 22. Since her diagnosis, Irene has done her best to remain her best self, however disease progression forced her to leave her teaching career as a high school English teacher in 2014.

In 2015 Irene joined the Westchester Walk Volunteer Committee, a group created to help make every walk even better than the one before. After four years of being instrumental in positive changes, Irene for the 2020

walk year was asked to be WALKMS Westchester Committee Chair and is excited for this new title as she starts her 6th year volunteering.

Over the past two years Irene has been doing advocacy work for disabled people, specifically at concert venues and hotels. After having horrible and harrowing experiences with ADA issues, and seeing a complete lack of understanding what a person with MS goes though to see music, or travel, Irene started conversation with Live Nation and Marriott so she could make these essential parts of life happy and safe again.

Currently Irene lives in Briarcliff Manor, New York with her husband Geoff, her 14 year old son Ben, and her dog Jesse.

She welcomes all correspondence and can be emailed at the link below.

WHY ARE WE THE 2Steppers?

2Steppers is named after the song "Two Step" by the Dave Matthews Band. This was Irene &    Geoff’s wedding song, and is the DMB2STEP meaning of Irene’s license plate.

For 26 years, the music of DMB has been able to lift Irene’s spirits.

Through Dave’s motifs of being the best you, living each day to the fullest, and surrounding yourself with the people you love, it is easy to connect with the lyrics.
